"If you don't know where you are going - any road will get you there"

Isn't that so true?

Do you know what you are going to do? - how specific are your plans? What are your reasons for going into business?

It really is worth spending some time thinking about this question.

Will you be doing something that you enjoy? I hope so! If you don't answer yes to this question, then why are you thinking of doing it? If you enjoy what you're doing it will seem a lot easier and you will ultimately be more successful than someone who doesn't.

Once you have a clear picture in your mind about what you want to do think about what you want from the business and what you want to achieve. This will be different for everybody, we all have our own goals and ideas so don't worry about what anyone else thinks or wants. Are you looking for an income, a high profile, a good reputation, or any combination of these and other things?

Think about how long you want to do it for, and how you will get out of it when that time arrives. Think about whether you will sell the business, pass it on to your family, or just close it down.

All of these things will have an effect on how you plan and structure your business.

Useful websites

I found a useful little program last year which can be very helpful. Its called Goal Pro and it allows you to record all your goals, which can be broken down into subgoals and individual tasks. It has a diary section so all your tasks can become appointments in your diary alongside your meetings and other work tasks.

I found this to be a very effective tool. Goals are so often lost because you don't have sight of them, and also because they just seem too daunting. If you actually go through the process of breaking them down into steps, then you just take the little steps as they come up in your diary and before you know it you have achieved the big goal!

Have a look for yourself at www.goalpro.com You can try it out for 30 days.
